September Community Events and Trainings
Partners throughout the state host a variety of community events and trainings designed to engage families, provide valuable resources, and promote early childhood development. From workshops and educational sessions to fun, interactive activities for kids, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
All of the events and trainings provided below are offered at no cost to participants. Some partners offer additional trainings which may charge a fee to participants. Click the links below to learn more or to register for the events and trainings. Thursday, September 4th
- The Children’s Cabinet – Cribs for Kids – 10:00am to 11:30am
- Location – LAS VEGAS – 5905 South Decatur Blvd., Suite 13, Las Vegas 89118
- Safe Sleep Education: A 1.5-hour parenting class on the importance of practicing safe sleep practices to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) which includes SIDS and preventable deaths like suffocation and strangulation in bed.
- REQUIREMENTS: Pregnant moms who are at least 6 months pregnant or have a child who is under 6 months old. This also includes caregivers who gain custody of a child who is under 6 months old. New Parents! Single Parents! Moms or Dads! Grandparents! (gaining custody)***Will Get a FREE Pack N Play and Informational Survival Kit when completing this class***

Saturday, September 6th
- Urban Roots and Renown Health Fair – 9:00am to 1:00pm
- Location – RENO – Renown Prescription Food Pantry - 1095 E. Second Street, Reno 89502
- Health fair for all ages! Will offer food distribution, vaccines for children, blood pressure checks, mobile dental services, recipe demos and plenty of fun crafting and planting activities for kiddos.

Monday, September 8th
- The Children’s Cabinet – The Parent’s Toolbox – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Location – RENO – 1090 S. Rock Blvd., Reno 89502
- Everyone should clearly understand the goals to building our own safe, sturdy, and happy home. Building on a sound foundation (values) keeps the home sturdy when storms of life happen. Balanced parenting guides each child with love, respect, and other positive family values. The design and structure of the home deals with every day life and promotes positive self- growth. Problem solving, positive discipline, weekly “crew” meetings, and planning time together engaging each family member keeps the outside negative influences away, while creating healthy lines of communication between family members.

Wednesday, September 10th
- The Children’s Cabinet – The Impact of the Games We Play – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Location – STATEWIDE – Live Online: Zoom
- Video games now outsell movies and music combined. Not surprisingly, video game and social media addictions are rising in kids and adults. This class will contrast healthy and problematic gaming and discuss features in video games and social media that are addictive. It will also teach parents and children the signs and symptoms of gaming addiction and its effects on children and the family. Participants will learn about community resources for gaming and gambling issues.

- A one-hour parenting/caregiver class on the importance of safe sleep practices to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) which include SIDS and other preventable deaths, like suffocation and strangulation, in bed. Participants will enhance their safe sleep education for the infant in their lives.

Stop by Summerlin Hospital's 3rd annual Oh Baby Expo for tours of the Birthplace, information from the Birthplace on breastfeeding and baby care, games, prizes, giveaways, refreshments and vendor tables focused on baby needs! Plus, our amazing sponsors are supporting this event to help purchase car seats to donate through physician offices.

Sunday, September 14th
- NAMI Walks – Northern Nevada 5K – 10:00am to 2:00pm
- Location – RENO – Edward C. Reed High School
- Join the NAMIWalks event to support Mental Health for All in Northern Nevada.
- Two walk options available: 1 Mile (around Reed HS Track) and 5K/3.2 Miles (around Reed HS Campus). There is no fee to participate/register, but the organization is requesting donations and/or fundraising from registered participants.

- Northern Nevada Veterans Block Party and Color Run – 10:00am to 3:00pm

- We invite you to the Northern Nevada Veterans Block Party, a special event designed to celebrate our military community and connect you with resources and support, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie.

Monday, September 22nd
- The Children’s Cabinet – Promoting Language and Literacy in Young Children – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Location – STATEWIDE – Live Online: Zoom
- The power of language and literacy in families is huge! Participants will learn how to promote their child's vocabulary growth through conversation and the benefits of reading to their children. They will develop an understanding of the basic sentence structure, how to recognize letters and their sounds, and the importance of the ability to print in everyday life. This class will teach caregivers how to engage in interactive storytelling, foster phonological awareness through rhyming and sound play, and encourage early writing skills through drawing and scribbling.

Tuesday, September 23rd POSTPONED TO NOVEMBER 4TH
- UNLV College of Education - Knowing When to be Concerned About My Child's Development and Learning - 5:30pm to 6:30pm

- Presented by Dr. Jenna Weglarz-Ward, Ph.D.
- Is my child developing normally or should I be concerned? When and where do I go for help? This session will provide resources on typical and atypical child development for children birth-5 with a specific focus on the process for understanding developmental concerns, potential developmental delays or disabilities, and how to seek out support in our Nevada communities.

Wednesday, September 24th
- HOPES’ and Health Plan of Nevada’s Community Baby Shower - 9:00am to 12:00pm
- Location - RENO - 580 W. 5th Street, Reno 89503, 3rd Floor
- Join us for a fun and educational Community Baby shower designed to support expecting mothers!
- Featuring free diapers for the first 50 attendees, Mama Care Kits for the first 20 attendees, educational booths, games & prizes, and information on maternal health care and pediatric care at Nevada HOPES.
- One lucky winner will receive the BIG PRIZE - a brand new All-In-One Baby Stroller/Car Seat!
- All giveaways are limited in quantity and will be given out on a first come, first served basis to eligible Medicaid recipients and/or low-income families. Must be present to win.

- Join us for the 2025 Nevada Family Wellness Summit, a statewide event focused on promoting the well-being of children and families. Hosted by Prevent Child Abuse Nevada and the Clark County Children's Mental Health Consortium.
