August Community Events and Trainings: Parent Trainings & Back to School Fairs Galore

Partners throughout the state host a variety of community events and trainings designed to engage families, provide valuable resources, and promote early childhood development. From workshops and educational sessions to fun, interactive activities for kids, there’s something for everyone to enjoy! 

All of the events and trainings provided below are offered at no cost to participants. Some partners offer additional trainings which may charge a fee to participants. Friday, August 1st 

• Catholic Charities Back to School Vaccine Event – 12:00pm to 3:00pm
• Location – RENO – 130 West Gepford Parkway, Sun Valley

• Nevada Treasury Back to School Fair – 5:00pm to 7:00pm
• Location – LAS VEGAS – Rancho High School – 1900 Searles Ave, Las Vegas, 89101

Saturday, August 2nd 

• Cox Back to School Fair – Downtown Summerlin – 9:00am to 1:00pm
• Location – LAS VEGAS – 1980 Festival Plaza Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89135
• Cox Back to School Fairs serve as a one-stop shop for parents and students to get back to school and are held over four weekends. Services include an immunization clinic with Smiths Pharmacy and representatives from the Clark County School District who are on hand to answer questions ranging from registration, learning opportunities, and enrollment.

Sunday, August 3rd

• Spring Valley Library Back to School Fair – 12:00pm to 2:00pm
• Location – LAS VEGAS – Spring Valley Library – 4280 S. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas 89103
• Celebrate the start of the school year at this free resource fair, which features FREE school supplies, games and activities, and a backpack giveaway (while supplies last)!
• Bring your family and friends to enjoy the festivities and FREE backpacks and supplies to help you prepare for the upcoming school year. This free event features a backpack and school supplies giveaway, crafts and games, plus so much more!

Monday, August 4th 

• Commissioner McCurdy’s Back to School Fair – 5:00pm to 8:00pm
• Location – LAS VEGAS – Walnut Community Center – 3075 N Walnut Road, Las Vegas 89115
• Backpack giveaway, school supplies and more!
• Open to families with children entering Kindergarten to 6th Grade – children must be present to receive supplies.

• The Children’s Cabinet – Active Parenting 601: Preparing Your Kids for School and Social Success – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
• Location – STATEWIDE – Online Virtual Class
• In this class we demonstrate how to become more involved in your child’s lifelong education using proven steps toward helping your child succeed in his or her schoolwork, and to filter out any negative influences that can prevent their life success. (This 2-hour class is intended for those with children ages 6 years and above)

Wednesday, August 6th  

• The Children’s Cabinet – Cooperative Parenting after Divorce and Separation (4 Part Program) – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
• Location – RENO – The Children’s Cabinet – 1090 South Rock Blvd.
• Cooperative parenting requires good communication skills and a willingness to place your child's interests first. In addition to communication, we will discuss avoiding power struggles, managing anger, and conflict resolution. Your children will have the benefit of the support and care they deserve. (This is an 8-hour program delivered over 4 two-hour sessions, for caregivers with children of all ages.)
• This is a 4-part series on: 8/6; 8/13; 8/20 and 8/27 Must attend all 4 sessions to get credit for court-ordered programs.

• The event will feature a resource fair, backpack giveaways, and so much more!

Thursday, August 7th  

• The Children’s Cabinet – Cribs for Kids – 10:00am to 11:30am
• Location – LAS VEGAS – 5905 South Decatur Blvd., Suite 13, Las Vegas 89118
• Safe Sleep Education: A 1.5-hour parenting class on the importance of practicing safe sleep practices to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) which includes SIDS and preventable deaths like suffocation and strangulation in bed.
• REQUIREMENTS: Pregnant moms who are at least 6 months pregnant or has a child who is under 6 months old. This also includes care givers who gain custody of a child who is under 6 months old. New Parents! Single Parents! Moms or Dads! Grandparents! (gaining custody)***Will Get a FREE Pack N Play and Informational Survival Kit when completing this class***

• The Children’s Cabinet – Promoting Emotional Literacy in Children – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
• Location – RENO – The Children’s Cabinet – 1090 South Rock Blvd.
• This class will provide participants with strategies to support and promote children’s self-confidence and self-direction. Participants will learn to encourage children to express and identify their feelings and give children the skills to persevere and maintain their focus. Participants will understand the benefits of emotional literacy for children and the impact it can have on family relationships. 2-hour class.)

• This class aims to equip parents with an understanding of sibling rivalry, their role in navigating siblings’ relationships, and provide strategies for managing and reducing conflict among siblings. This class will foster a more peaceful and cooperative family dynamic by teaching conflict resolution skills and promoting positive interactions.

• The Children’s Cabinet – Toxic Stress and Child Development – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
• Location – STATEWIDE – Online Virtual Class
• A child's earliest years are the most crucial for brain development. However, daily stressful environments can negatively affect their emotional, social, and physical development. This workshop shows how stress can affect brain development, while helping you identify children who might be unsafe, and the steps taken when suspicion arises. (This 2-hour class is intended for those with children of all ages.)

Saturday, August 23rd

• William B. Ririe Health Fair – 10:00am to 2:00pm
• Location – ELY – William B. Ririe Hospital Clinic – 1500 Avenue H, Ely, NV
• Open to the public – Join First 5 Nevada and other community partners for health screenings, community resources and more! Free lunch and give-aways, including 3 raffle prizes! You can also walk through the inflatable lung.

• Kickoff to Kindergarten – 10:00am to 1:00pm
• Location – LAS VEGAS – East Las Vegas Library – 2851 E. Bonanza Road, Las Vegas 89101
• Prepare your child for school at University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s school readiness fair! Attendees will enjoy hands-on activities and learn about Nevada Pre-K standards. The CCSD book bus, UNLV dental screenings and a produce market will also be available. This event is designed for children ages 3-5 and their families.

• Learn how everyday routines—like mealtime, bathtime, and bedtime—can become powerful brain-building moments. This class explores early brain development, the importance of structure and consistency, and how Vroom’s simple tips fit seamlessly into your daily schedule to support your child’s growth. (This is a 1.5 hour class)
