Community Events and Trainings- July 2025
Partners throughout the state host a variety of community events and trainings designed to engage families, provide valuable resources, and promote early childhood development. From workshops and educational sessions to fun, interactive activities for kids, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
All of the events and trainings provided below are offered at no cost to participants. Some partners offer additional trainings which may charge a fee to participants. Tuesday, July 1st
- The Children’s Cabinet – Active Parenting 101: You and Your Child – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Location – RENO – The Children’s Cabinet – 1090 South Rock Blvd.
- Parenting requires a lot of energy. Because children respond better to actions than to words, to be an effective parent is to be an active parent. This class will help you clarify your own goals for your child and teach you effective methods for leading your child toward those roles. It will also teach you a consistent model of parenting, enabling you to act with confidence and clarity as you encounter the many challenges parents face.

Wednesday, July 2nd
- The Children’s Cabinet – Young Kids and Screens – 12:00pm to 1:00pm
- Location – NORTH LAS VEGAS – Dolores Huerta Resource Center – 1737 Hunkins Drive
- Young Kids and Screens will help parents and caregivers of children 0-8 years old to: navigate the world of media and technology, understand the importance of choosing high-quality media content, and establish a healthy balance of activities for young children, with and without media and tech.

Monday, July 7th
- The Children’s Cabinet – Positive Solutions for Families #6: Responding with Purpose – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Location – RENO – The Children’s Cabinet – 1090 South Rock Blvd.
- This is session 6 of a multi-series training focused on behavior supports. This session focuses on ways to respond to challenging behavior. The goal is to have a better understanding of new ways to prevent challenging behavior and some intentional ways to respond when challenging behavior occurs.

Tuesday, July 8th
- The Children’s Cabinet – Active Parenting 201: Teaching Your Child Communication and Cooperation – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Location – STATEWIDE – Online Virtual Class
- When people work together cooperatively, problems are solved. A child who learns to work cooperatively with others has a far greater chance of success than a child who stands alone. This class will help you develop the skills for teaching cooperation and good communication to your child. We will discuss how to help our kids recognize and solve common problems using sound communication skills (e.g., Active Listening, responding to feelings, looking for alternatives, offering encouragement, and follow-up).

Thursday, July 10th
- First 5 Nevada Family Leadership Council – Parent Summit– 10:00am to 12:00pm
- Location – ELKO – Great Basin College – 1500 College Parkway
- Discover how you can help shape early childhood systems with the First 5 Nevada Family Leadership Council. This initiative empowers parents and families with firsthand experience raising young children (0-8) by ensuring they have leadership and decision-making roles in shaping policies and programs.
- Lunch and child care will be provided. Participants will receive a $50 gift card for their participation.

Friday, July 11th
- Community Baby Shower – SilverSummit Health Plan – 2:00pm to 4:00pm
- Location – RENO – Northern NV Public Health – 1001 E. Ninth Street, Building B
- Join us for a special Community Baby Shower where we celebrate expectant moms and new arrivals into our community. The event is open to all members of the community and aims to provide support and connection to a variety of resources. There will be baby supplies, a raffle and beverages and snacks.

Monday, July 14th
- The Children’s Cabinet – Vroom! – 11:00am to 12:00pm
- Location – NORTH LAS VEGAS – Dignity Health North Vegas – 1550 W. Craig Road, Suite 250
- Vroom workshop reinforces the knowledge of early brain development, teaches how to turn everyday moments into brain building moments, and encourages adults to have fun while trying some Vroom Tips with their children. Each activity session is designed for parents with children ages 3-5 years old.

Tuesday, July 15th
- The Children’s Cabinet – Active Parenting 301: Teaching Your Child Responsibility – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Location – RENO – The Children’s Cabinet – 1090 South Rock Blvd.
- This class will present methods of handling problems and misbehavior when they occur in the family. It is also about responsibility. We will discuss how to help your child be more accountable for their actions using a proven, punish-free problem-solving model, which applies both basic and advanced disciplinary methods, choices, and logical consequences.

- La Fuerza de Familias Latinas – Leyendo en Casa (Reading at Home) – 5pm to 6pm
- Location: STATEWIDE - Virtual
- Workshops provided in Spanish only.
- Participate in this virtual workshop, via Zoom, where you will see short videos with the famous presenter Gaby Rivero. In addition, you will be able to talk with other Latino parents and Latina mothers to share ideas on how to promote a love of reading in your children.

Wednesday, July 16th (5 sessions: 7/16, 7/18, 7/21, 7/23, and 7/25)
- La Fuerza de Familias Latinas – Family Engagement Workshop Series - 10am OR 5pm
- Location: STATEWIDE - Virtual
- Workshops provided in Spanish only.
- Participants receive $25 and 5 books.

Friday, July 18th
- The Children’s Cabinet – STEM – 11:00am to 12:00pm
- Location –LAS VEGAS – CCSD Family Support Center – 1720 S. Maryland Parkway
- The Children's Cabinet provides a free 1-hour STEM class where participants (parents & children) will engage in several different STEM activities and experiments. Eligible Participants: Parents with children ages 3-5 years old.

- Nevada Urban Indians Back to School Event – 1:00pm to 7:00pm
- Location – RENO – 9480 Gateway Drive
- In partnership with Molina Healthcare, participants will receive backpacks, school supplies, community resources, food, games and music. Free sports physicals and vaccines with pre-registration. All are welcome!

Saturday, July 19th
- Be My Neighbor Day – PBS Reno – 10:00am to 2:00pm
- Location – RENO – Idelewild Park – 1900 Idelewild Drive
- This free, family-friendly community event promotes early childhood education, health, safety and values highlighted on Daniel Tiger and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Children and parents alike will learn the importance of community-focused kindness and sharing by giving back to the community in which we live.

- Cox Back to School Fair – 11:00am to 3:00pm
- Location – LAS VEGAS – The Boulevard Mall – 3528 S. Maryland Parkway
- Cox Back to School Fairs serve as a one-stop shop for parents and students to get back to school. Services include an immunization clinic with Smiths Pharmacy and representatives from the Clark County School District who are on hand to answer questions ranging from registration, learning opportunities, and enrollment.
In addition, more than 30 community agencies and organizations will be in attendance to educate families about their services and programs, including First 5 Nevada!

- Christmas in July Carnival: Backpack Giveaway – 10:00am to 1:00pm
- Location – RENO – Boys and Girls Club – 2680 E. Ninth Stree
- Local Washoe County students in need—from pre-K through 12th grade—are invited to join the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office for a day of carnival fun! Enjoy games, activities, lunch and a chance to connect with valuable community resources. Over 1,200 backpacks filled with school supplies and hygiene items will be distributed.

Tuesday, July 22nd
- The Children’s Cabinet – Active Parenting 401: Teaching Your Child Courage and Self-Esteem – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Location – STATEWIDE – Online Virtual Class
- Preparing a child to courageously meet the challenges that life offers is perhaps the single most important aspect of parenting. In this class, we will discuss how you can help your child develop self-confidence and self-esteem. We will talk about a simple, yet effective and proven model of problem-solving, while helping you prevent the need to always take over and “save” your kid.

Wednesday, July 23rd

- Location – HENDERSON – Galleria at Sunset Mall – 1300 W. Sunset Road
- Cox Back to School Fairs serve as a one-stop shop for parents and students to get back to school. - Back to School Supply Distribution and Resource Fair – Councilwoman Diaz– 10:00am to 1:00pm
- Location – LAS VEGAS – East Las Vegas Community Center – 250 North Eastern Ave.
- Las Vegas City Council and Councilwoman Olivia Diaz invite Ward 3 residents to the Back-to-School Supply Distribution and Resource Fair. The event will feature free school supplies for students (while supplies last, students must be present to receive supplies) and community resource booths. Admission is FREE and limited to the first 1,000 participants.

- NOMHE 4th Annual School Health & Education Resource Fair – 10:00am to 1:00pm
- Location – LAS VEGAS – Helen C. Cannon Middle School – 5850 Euclid Street
- The Nevada Office of Minority Health and Equity (NOMHE) and Fountain of Hope AME Church present the 4th annual School Health and Education Resource Fair, where families and their students can access school supplies, resources and other essential services.

- Family Health Festival – 9:00am to 12:00pm
- Location – SPARKS – Hug High School – 3530 Sullivan Lane
- The Family Health Festival connects the community with local resources for health, education, food, transportation, safety and more! This Festival has a special focus on back-to-school support.

Tuesday, July 29th
- The Children’s Cabinett – Active Parenting 501: Redirecting Misbehavior – 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Location – RENO
- In this class, we explain the age-old question, “What are they thinking?” by first understanding what motivates our kids’ behaviors, and then how to best redirect them towards making better choices using some common, yet effective techniques and strategies.

Wednesday, July 30th

- Location – STATEWIDE – Online Virtual Class
- Learn effective, evidence-based strategies to encourage positive behavior and reduce challenging behaviors at home. This class will help parents understand the "why" behind behavior and teach proactive tools grounded in Positive Behavior Support (PBS). Build stronger routines, improve communication, and foster a more peaceful and cooperative home environment.
