July is well-known for celebrating the independence of our great nation but did you know that in 1994, Congress unanimously passed “The Parents’ Day Resolution” establishing the fourth Sunday of July as a perennial day of commemoration?

According to Parent’s Day, on this day each year, throughout the nation in almost every state, community leaders organize Parents’ Day events to honor parents, celebrate teamwork in raising children, and support the role of parental guidance in building a strong, stable society.

First 5 Nevada also recognizes that it takes a community to ensure our kids and their families are safe, supported and able to reach their potential.

On the Parent and Family Support page of the website, parents can find:

Parent training and education programs are designed to support parents in developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to effectively fulfill their roles as caregivers and educators for their children.

These programs typically offer various resources, workshops, classes, and interventions aimed at enhancing parenting practices and promoting child development. Parent training and education programs can take various forms, including in-person workshops,  online courses, home visits, and written materials.

They are offered through schools, nonprofit organizations, healthcare facilities, and social service agencies. These programs aim to empower parents with the knowledge and skills they need to create supportive and nurturing environments that foster their children's growth and development.

Some of the programs and services available to help parents are:

A series of free, valuable programs designed to assist parents in becoming more effective in raising their children.

They also address specialized areas such as cooperative parenting post-divorce, building a child's courage and self-esteem, and understanding the impact of toxic stress on child development. Offered both in-person and online, these free sessions are led by experienced instructors and provide practical strategies for all aspects of parenting.

Play and Learn is a program geared toward parents and caregivers who care for young children 5 years and younger. The goal is to teach how to bolster the development of a child by learning from each other and early childhood experts. Parents and caregivers can expect to build friendships, bond with others, and have fun during the weekly two-hour sessions. The program creates planned interactions for caregivers and their children to do together that include brain-building activities, conversation, yoga, songs, dance and play time so kids can practice skills through a series of 6 sessions.

Renown Hospital offers a range of childbirth classes to help expecting parents prepare for the journey of pregnancy and childbirth. These classes, taught by certified childbirth educators and doulas, cover essential topics such as labor and delivery, postpartum care, breastfeeding, and pain management. Designed to empower parents these classes provide a supportive environment to learn and practice various ways to ensure a safe and positive birth experience. The program includes a variety of options, including Baby and Family Suites Tours, Breathing & Relaxation Techniques, and a comprehensive Pregnancy and Birth series, along with additional resources like Infant CPR and Newborn Care classes.
