April Community Events and Trainings

Partners throughout the state host a variety of community events and trainings designed to engage families, provide valuable resources, and promote early childhood development. From workshops and educational sessions to fun, interactive activities for kids, there’s something for everyone to enjoy! 

All of the events and trainings provided below are offered at no cost to participants. We also offer online courses. Some partners offer additional trainings which may charge a fee to participants. Thursday, April 2nd

• The Children’s Cabinet – Pinwheels for Prevention!  – 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm
• Location – RENO–Neil Road Recreation Center– 3925 Neil Road, Reno, NV 89502 
• Join us for the Pinwheels for Prevention Event, a family-friendly gathering focused on raising awareness and supporting strong, healthy families. Enjoy free activities for children, connect with local organizations, and explore a community resource fair offering helpful services and information for families. Together, we celebrate bright futures for all children.

Tuesday, April 7th

• The Children’s Cabinet – Cribs for Kids!  – 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm
• Location – LAS VEGAS–5905 South Decatur Boulevard Las Vegas, NV 89118
• This is a free parenting class on the importance of understanding safe sleep practices to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID), which include SIDS and preventable deaths, like suffocation and strangulation, in bed.

• The Children’s Cabinet – Active Parenting 101: Becoming the Active Parent– 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
• Location – RENO–Nevada Strong Start Child Care Services Center- 961 Matley Lane Suite 110 Reno, NV 89502
• Parenting requires a lot of energy. Because children respond better to actions than to words, to be an effective parent is to be an active parent. This class will help you clarify your own goals for your child and teach you effective methods for leading your child toward those roles. It will also teach you a consistent model of parenting, enabling you to act with confidence and clarity as you encounter the many challenges parents face. (This 2-hour class is intended for those with children ages 6 years and above.)

Wednesday, April 11th

• UMC’s Spring Family Wellness & Safety Festival– 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Tuesday, April 14th

• The Children’s Cabinet – Active Parenting 201: Helping Your Kids Learn Good Communication– 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
• Location – RENO–Nevada Strong Start Child Care Services Center- 961 Matley Lane Suite 110 Reno, NV 89502
• When people work together cooperatively, problems are solved. A child who learns to work cooperatively with others has a far greater chance of success than a child who stands alone. This class will help you develop the skills for teaching cooperation and good communication to your child. We will discuss how to help our kids recognize and solve common problems using sound communication skills (e.g., Active Listening, responding to feelings, looking for alternatives, offering encouragement, and follow-up). (2-hour program)

Wednesday, April 15th

• The Children’s Cabinet – Brain Building Moments with Vroom – 10:30 am to 12:00 pm
• Location – LAS VEGAS–Family 2 Family Connection- 3900 Cambridge Street  #107 Las Vegas, NV 89119
• Vroom Workshop reinforces the knowledge of early brain development, teaches how to turn everyday moments into brain-building moments, and encourages adults to have fun while trying some Vroom tips with their Children. Each activity session is designed for parents with children ages 3-5 years old

• The Children’s Cabinet –Positive Behavior Supports for Parents– 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
• Location – RENO–Nevada Strong Start Child Care Services Center- 961 Matley Lane Suite 110 Reno, NV 89502
• Learn effective, evidence-based strategies to encourage positive behavior and reduce challenging behaviors at home. This class will help parents understand the "why" behind behavior and teach proactive tools grounded in Positive Behavior Support (PBS). Build stronger routines, improve communication, and foster a more peaceful and cooperative home environment.

Monday, April 20th

• The Children’s Cabinet –Approaches to Learning– 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

• Parents will learn how children demonstrate: Curiosity and initiative. Willingness to take risks and use flexibility in thinking and actions. The ability to focus attention and persist in an activity. Imagination and engage in different types of play.

Tuesday, April 21st

• The Children’s Cabinet – I'm Ready for K!  – 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
• Location – LAS VEGAS–Alexander Library –1755 W Alexander Road North Las Vegas, NV 89032
• I'm Ready for K Sessions are designed for children ages 3-5 years old with the primary aim of teaching social, emotional and academic skills needed for pre-K and Kindergarten readiness, while providing an opportunity for positive parent-child interaction and strengthening the parent-child relationship.

• The Children’s Cabinet –Active Parenting 301: Teaching Your Children Personal Responsibility– 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
• Location – RENO–Nevada Strong Start Child Care Services Center- 961 Matley Lane Suite 110 Reno, NV 89502
• This class will present methods of handling problems and misbehavior when they occur in the family. It is also about responsibility. We will discuss how to help your child be more accountable for their actions using a proven, punish-free problem-solving model, which applies both basic and advanced disciplinary methods, choices, and logical consequences. (This 2-hour class is intended for those caring for children ages 6 years and above)

Thursday, April 23rd

• Educación para un sueño seguro: Clase de 1.5 horas para padres sobre la importancia de practicar hábitos de sueño seguro para reducir el riesgo de muerte súbita infantil (SUID), que incluye el SMSL y muertes prevenibles como asfixia y estrangulación en la cama.

• Preparing a child to courageously meet the challenges that life offers is perhaps the single most important aspect of parenting. In this class, we will discuss how you can help your child develop self-confidence and self-esteem. We will talk about a simple, yet effective and proven model of problem-solving, while helping you prevent the need to always take over and “save” your kid.

Wednesday, April 29th

• The Children’s Cabinet – Magic Moments with Books – 10:30 am to 12:00 pm
• Location – LAS VEGAS–Family 2 Family Connection- 3900 Cambridge Street  #107 Las Vegas, NV 89119
• In this class, we create an engaging environment where families and children will explore the magic of stories. We start with a captivating read-aloud, using expressive voices and lively gestures to bring the characters and events to life. After the story, Attendees will have the opportunity to read more stories and complete their education. Activities connected with each book. The goal is to make reading fun and foster a lifelong love of books.
