Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services updates shelter expense verification requirements

The Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services (DWSS) is implementing additional verification requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Effective immediately, customers must provide proof of shelter and utility expenses.

To streamline application processing, customers are urged to bring current utility bills, lease agreement, mortgage statement or rental receipts when applying for benefits at any DWSS office. Documentation for applications processed over the phone can be emailed directly or uploaded in the Access Nevada portal.

Housing expenses directly impact the amount of assistance a household is eligible to receive. Verifying these costs helps maintain program integrity and may increase benefit amount.

Individuals experiencing food insecurity are encouraged to apply for SNAP benefits onlinein person, or by calling (775) 684-4000 in Northern Nevada) or (702)486-1646 in Southern Nevada.

About the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

The SNAP program, commonly known as “food stamps”, provides a monthly benefit to assist low-income individuals with purchasing nutritious food from authorized retailers.

SNAP is available to all Nevadans who meet specific income and eligibility requirements.
