As of April 2025, First 5 Nevada, an initiative launched by The Children’s Cabinet, is commemorating its first anniversary. This milestone marks a year of significant strides in providing comprehensive support to families with children from prenatal stages through age five. Through its user-friendly platform, First 5 Nevada has become a vital resource, connecting families to essential services and empowering them to foster the healthy development of their young children.

A Vision Realized

The inception of First 5 Nevada was driven by the recognition that the early years of a child's life are crucial for their development. With nearly 90% of brain development occurring before the age of 5, the need for accessible resources and support for families became evident.

Launched during the Week of the Young Child™ in April 2024, First 5 Nevada aims to centralize information and services for families, ensuring equitable access regardless of income or location. The initiative has brought together more than 60 organizations across the state, representing more than 30 different programs, services and resources for families with young children. These encompass areas such as child care and early education, health and safety, special needs and early intervention, food and nutrition, and parenting and family support.

Key Achievements in the First Year

1. Centralized Access to Resources

The First 5 Nevada website serves as a one-stop hub for families, allowing them to easily navigate and access a wide array of services. Through the eligibility portal, families can input their specific needs and receive a personalized list of programs they qualify for, complete with contact information. This tailored approach ensures that families find the most relevant and beneficial resources available to them.

2. Community Engagement and Outreach

Understanding the importance of community involvement, First 5 Nevada has actively engaged with local communities through events and partnerships. Notably, the initiative hosted a free Early Childhood Screening and Connection event in Southern Nevada on April 5, 2025. In collaboration with the UNLV Doctoral Occupational Therapy Program and the College of Southern Nevada, the event provided no-cost developmental, mental/behavioral health, and oral health screenings. Additionally, on-site referrals were offered, along with fun activities for children and giveaways from community partners.

3. Empowering Parent Leaders

Recognizing that parents are the most influential advocates for their children, First 5 Nevada established the Family Leadership Council. This council recruits passionate parents and caregivers to take on leadership roles, allowing them to collaborate in shaping early childhood policies and ensuring that the voices of families are integral in decision-making processes.

4. Strategic Planning for the Future

First 5 Nevada is committed to continuous improvement and expansion. The initiative has developed a strategic plan that outlines goals and objectives for the coming years, focusing on enhancing service delivery, increasing community engagement, and ensuring that all families have access to the resources they need to support their children's development.

Impact on Nevada Families

The impact of First 5 Nevada on families across the state has been profound. By simplifying access to essential services and providing personalized support, the initiative has alleviated the challenges many families face in navigating the complex landscape of early childhood resources. Parents now have a reliable partner in ensuring their children receive the care and support they deserve during these formative years.

Looking Ahead

As First 5 Nevada celebrates its first anniversary, the focus remains on building upon the foundation established in its inaugural year. Plans for the future include expanding the range of services offered, enhancing the user experience on the platform, and continuing to foster partnerships with community organizations to reach even more families in need.

The first year of First 5 Nevada has been marked by significant achievements in empowering families and supporting the healthy development of young children. As the initiative moves forward, its commitment to providing accessible, equitable, and comprehensive resources ensures a brighter future for Nevada's youngest residents.
